Plenty for youth to learn & explore at CBMM this fall

 ST. MICHAELS, Md., Sept. 22, 2022 – It’s a great time to learn and explore at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum with a variety of youth programming on tap this fall designed to engage children of all ages.

 

CBMM’s after-school programs – Rising Tide and Free Fishing – are back this month, a four-lesson STEAM Team series kicks off Oct. 8 and Lighthouse Overnight Adventures remain available for groups through October. That’s in addition to fall field trips for student groups, including school, Scout, and other youth programs.

 

Targeted at sixth-through-ninth graders, Rising Tide teaches the basics of tool use, following a build plan, and woodworking techniques. This fall, the program continues work on building two stand-up paddleboards as well as a few other smaller projects.

 

Rising Tide resumed Sept. 19 and is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm. Transportation is offered from the Easton YMCA and from St. Michaels Middle/High School (SMMHS). Register at bit.ly/RisingTide2022 or email risingtide@cbmm.org for more information.

Running Sept. 28 through Nov. 2, CBMM’s Free Fishing program invites community members of all ages for catch-and-release fishing on Wednesdays this fall from 3:30-5:30pm.

 

No fishing license or equipment is required to participate. Fishing rods and bait are provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own fishing pole. Children under 10 must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult. For middle and high school students, transportation from SMMHS to CBMM is provided.

In October and November, little mariners are invited to join CBMM’s STEAM Team! Led by an experienced educator in each Saturday session, children will explore Chesapeake-related topics that incorporate a variety of activities related to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math).

 

Sessions are available for ages 4-6 and 6-9, beginning with an Oct. 8 program on Lighthouse Life. Other program themes include Shipwreck Scientists (Oct. 22), Simple Machines Move the Maritime World (Nov. 5), and Boats of the Bay (Nov. 12).

 

Class sizes are limited, with advanced registration needed. The cost per class is $15, with a 20% discount for CBMM members. Register online for all four sessions for an additional discount. Last but not least, groups can plan a Lighthouse Overnight Adventure this fall! Step back in time to experience the life of a lighthouse keeper and spend the night in the Hooper Strait Lighthouse at CBMM. Participants can try their hand at the keeper’s traditional duties, listen to stories and discover facts and clues about lighthouse living, navigation, and Bay history through hands-on activities.

Wooden classics, vintage racers, and other antique and Chesapeake Bay-related boats are coming to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum June 16-18 for the 30th annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival and the Arts at Navy Point in St. Michaels, Md. Hosted by the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society, this Father’s Day weekend event brings a sense of nostalgia to the Miles River and CBMM’s docks and campus, drawing some of the area’s finest classic boats, nautical and maritime treasures, entertainment, food, and libations to this waterfront festival.

“With a juried competition among entrants for best restored and preserved boats, this festival attracts the best of the best when it comes to classic and antique boats,” commented ACBS-Chesapeake Bay Chapter Festival Chairman Bob Hamilton. “And with this year celebrating our 30th year with the festival, guests will have a great opportunity to see some incredible boats this Father’s Day weekend.”

The show attracts the finest runabouts to yachts, including race boats, work boats, launches, hydroplanes, and utilities. Chris-Craft, Trumpy, Gar Wood, Donzi, and Lyman are among some of the boats represented.

This year’s festival will feature a selection of sailing log canoes on land and in the water. A regional adaptation of the traditional Indian dugout canoes, log canoes were used from the 18th through the 20th century as all-purpose Chesapeake craft, to harvest oysters, transport goods, and to get people from place to place. A small fleet continues—including CBMM’s Flying Cloud, Edmee S., Marianne, and Bufflehead—with many seen today along the Chesapeake’s Chester, Miles, and Tred Avon Rivers during highly competitive sailing races each summer and fall. With long masts and large sails, these boats keep upright as they accelerate to speeds of 10 knots or more, with crew members climbing to the ends of 15-foot boards placed perpendicular to the boat itself.

Along with the East Coast’s largest gathering of antique and classic boats, the festival’s signature Arts at Navy Point pavilion brings more than 70 juried fine artists, craftspeople, and vendors offering nautical and maritime-themed items for boat and home.

Workshops and seminars, building demonstrations, family activities, and a nautical flea market will be available throughout the weekend, along with a selection of regional and grilled foods, music, and a waterside bar and deck for libations and other drinks. Saturday’s seminars will feature informative presentations on marine topics, headlined by the Honorable John C. North II’s presentation on log canoes. Times and information on all seminars will be announced at a later date and will be in the Festival program given out at the event.

Children’s activities include boatbuilding craft projects, and the Hagerty Insurance Marine Youth Judging program, where youth learn about the award-winning qualities of preserved and restored classic boats. Along the Fogg’s Landing side of CBMM’s campus, the festival’s Field of Dreams features an array of restorable classic boats and motors, along with other items in a nautical flea market sale.

While at the Antique & Classic Boat Festival, guests can also watch progress on the log-hull restoration of the 1889 bugeye Edna E. Lockwood, now underway in CBMM’s boatyard through 2018. Special exhibitions include Potomac Waterfowling: Gunning the Nation’s Rivers, and Robert de Gast’s Chesapeake, featuring 80 photographs curated from the more than 10,000 by de Gast in CBMM’s collection. Potomac Waterfowling opens April 8, 2017 and continues through March, 2018, with Robert de Gast’s Chesapeake opening May 12, 2017, through April, 2018.

Festival hours are Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Father’s Day, Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The festival includes two-day admission to all of CBMM’s special and permanent exhibitions, including the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, where guests can climb to the top for views of the Miles River and St. Michaels harbor. The event is $5 for CBMM adult members, or $18 for adults; $15 for seniors and students with ID; and $6 for children 6-17.

Community Day at Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Sunday, May 21, 2017

Free admission for everyone, all day long!

As a way of saying thank you to the regional community, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md. is hosting its second free Community Day on Sunday, May 21, 2017, with all festivities taking place on CBMM’s Fogg’s Landing, and including free admission for everyone, plus live music, regional foods and drinks, family activities, free boat rides, and more.

Highlights for this year’s event include the opportunity to see the schooner Sultana dockside, along with numerous family activities and special exhibitions. The event’s generous sponsors include CBMM’s Friends Board, Choptank Electric Cooperative, Curtis Stokes & Associates, Talbot County Free Library, and What’s Up? Magazine.

The day’s events kick off at 9:00 a.m. with the Bay Hundred Covenant Churches’ tent service,  with festival guests invited to attend, and continues to 5:00 p.m.

The Covenant Church service includes leaders and congregations from area churches, with participants engaging in gospel singing and prayer. Covenant Churches works to unite the Town of St. Michaels and surrounding Bay Hundred community by connecting African-American and Anglo-American churches from throughout the area.

The day’s live music includes performances by Blind Wind, an award winning local band fronted by 14-year-old blind harmonica player, Cole Moran, along with his father, Frankie Moran on guitar and vocals. Their repertoire includes bluegrass, country, Americana classic rock, reggae, fiddle tunes, and more.

CBMM’s Model Sailing Club will hold a radio-controlled skipjack regatta from the Steamboat Building’s docks and along Fogg’s Cove from 11:00 a.m. until noon. Afterwards, festival-goers will have the opportunity to try their hand at operating the radio-controlled boats.

The Talbot County Free Library will be hosting several programs throughout CBMM’s free Community Day, including a presentation in the Van Lennep Auditorium by Maryland author and storyteller, Ed Okonowicz on “Delmarva Tales, Legends, and Ghost Stories” at noon, and a performance by Blue Sky Puppet Theatre at 1:00 p.m. Families can also explore the Chesapeake’s critters in the Phillips Wharf Environmental Center’s Fishmobile, with children invited to participate in a footrace hosted by Chesapeake Sports Alliance.

While enjoying the festivities, Community Day guests can enjoy a climb to the top of the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, talk with shipwrights and apprentices engaged in wooden boatbuilding and restoration in the boatyard, and explore any of CBMM’s 12 exhibition buildings and historic structures, all situated in a park-like setting along the Miles River and the St. Michaels harbor. CBMM’s waterfront campus is within walking distance to the specialty shops, restaurants, inns, and bed and breakfasts in St. Michaels’ historic district.

Throughout the day, Community Day guests can take free scenic river cruises aboard a number of CBMM’s historic vessels, including the 1920 buyboat Winnie Estelle, or get out on the water rowing or sailing aboard one of CBMM’s small craft. All boat rides are offered free of charge for this event.

The Shades of Blue at Big Band Night July 1 in St. Michaels

In celebration of Independence Day, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md. welcomes The Shades of Blue Orchestra for a live performance at its Saturday, July 1 Big Band Night. The St. Michaels fireworks are scheduled to launch after dusk that evening, with CBMM’s waterfront campus a great venue from which guests can enjoy the fireworks. The rain date for the concert and fireworks is Sunday, July 2.

Two vocalists will join the 18-piece Shades of Blue Orchestra as they perform from the historic Tolchester Beach Bandstand. The orchestra first played at CBMM’s 2014 Big Band Night, with numerous requests from patrons for return engagements.

The orchestra is set to begin at 7:00 p.m., with the public invited to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets for an evening of music, dancing, and fireworks along the Miles River.

Food, ice cream, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase during the event, which is generously sponsored by Eastern Shore Tents & Events.

 

 Mixing together popular standards, a variety of musical styles, and dance-able rhythms, the Shades of Blue Orchestra combines brass, woodwind, and rhythm instruments to bring music from the 1930s to present to the Miles River. Established in 1976, this 18-piece Big Band consists of a well-balanced complement of brass, woodwind, and rhythm instruments, as well as two of the finest Big Band vocalists anywhere.

The Orchestra’s repertoire of music includes swing, rock, standard and popular ballads, Latin, retro, waltzes, and other selections. The Baltimore-based orchestra has performed at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, M&T Bank Stadium, Camden Yards, the Smithsonian Institution, Ocean City’s Sunfest, and more. CBMM’s exhibitions and campus will close at 5:00 p.m. for Big Band Night, and re-open at 6:00 p.m. for guests to enter the campus for the event. Admission to Big Band Night is $6 for CBMM members and $10 for non-members, with children ages 5 and under free.
