St. Michaels Farmers Market 20^th Birthday Celebration!

St. Michaels, MD – On Saturday, June 30^th from 8:30 to 11:30am, the St. Michaels Farmers Market invites everyone to come on over to 204 S. Talbot St. in St. Michaels to join them in celebrating their 20^th year of offering fresh, healthy, delicious items from regional farms and local producers to the Bay Hundred community.  

The Market will be a busier-than-usual beehive of activity for its 20^th birthday with free tastings from guest chefs, including longtime Talbot County resident, Michael Rork; “birthday cake” from Arlene’s Creations; ice cream donated by Justine’s; and a raffle of market baskets full of tasty items donated by vendors.

As always, customers, families and friends are invited to come together to not only shop but also celebrate summer and yummy foods. On the special Market birthday, customers will be treated to music by Cambridge-based band, Blackwater, who will offer their unique repertoire of rock, blues, reggae and bluegrass. With an ever expanding array of original songs, and their own versions of not-so-familiar covers, something new is always on the playlist!

The new leadership for the Market has grown it in several new directions this year. It’s ‘producer-only’ focus—meaning everything sold at the market is grown or produced by the person selling it—makes the St. Michaels Farmers Market a unique asset for the mid-Shore community. This year, they have expanded to include an adjacent lot, allowing for several new vendors, and have made the Market SNAP-friendly so that more people and community can purchase the fresh healthy meats, vegetables and other goods available.

See Lady Maryland in St. Michaels October 20-23

Guests to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md. can see Lady Maryland dockside from Friday, October 20 through Monday, October 23.

Built in 1985 by the Living Classrooms Foundation, Lady Maryland is a replica of a Chesapeake Bay pungy schooner. Pungies were considered fast sailing vessels in the 1800s, and were primarily used as workboats carrying perishable cargo such as oysters, watermelons, tomatoes, fish, peaches, and grain.

Throughout the warmer months, CBMM's marina is host to numerous visiting tall ships and vessels, with on-board programming and dockside tour opportunities. Delaware half-hull model workshop October 21, 22 in St. Michaels

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Model Guild is offering a beginner’s model boatbuilding workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 21 and 22, with limited participation and advanced registration needed.

The weekend workshop includes instruction on carving a solid half-hull model of the historic Chesapeake Bay tugboat Delaware. This model is band-sawed from a two-tone wood block and carved to the rounded shape of the Delaware’s hull. The cabin and pilot house are cut from the same pieces. The pieces are then shaped and sanded to a fine finish and then mounted on a baseboard to form a wall display piece.

The workshop is taught by the skilled craftsmen of CBMM’s Model Guild, who enjoy sharing their knowledge and techniques with CBMM members, visitors, and students.

Built in Bethel, Del. by William H. Smith, the 1912 tug Delaware once hauled scows on Broad Creek—often laden with lumber—and towed ram schooners to and from Laurel, Del. Occasionally, she carried parties of young people to Sandy Hill for day trips on the Nanticoke River. Donated to CBMM by Bailey Marine Construction in 1991, Delaware is now a floating exhibition along CBMM’s waterfront campus.

Adults and children 12 years of age and older can participate in the workshop, with all tools and materials supplied, as well as some use of the Model Guild’s power tools. The two day workshop takes place in CBMM’s Bay History building and is $80 for CBMM members or $110 for non-members, with participants taking home their half-hull model at the end of the workshop.

CBMM’s Fall Speaker Series begins October 18

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md., begins its Fall Speaker Series on Oct. 18 and continues on select dates through Dec. 6, 2017. All of the sessions from the four-part series will explore topics related to CBMM’s latest exhibition, Robert de Gast’s Chesapeake, on display in CBMM’s Steamboat Building through April 8, 2018. All sessions take place in CBMM’s Van Lennep Auditorium, with advanced registration needed, as seating is limited.

Robert de Gast’s Chesapeake includes 80 matted and framed exhibition prints principally drawn from his three books The Oystermen of the Chesapeake (1970), The Lighthouses of Chesapeake Bay (1973), and Western Wind, Eastern Shore: A Sailing Cruise around the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia (1975), and are shown in a manner that enhances the stark aesthetic, artistic perspective, and intimate familiarity of his work.

De Gast’s classic work, The Oystermen of the Chesapeake, documented scenes from the last days of the Chesapeake’s golden age of oystering. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 5 pm, join Tom McHugh, director emeritus of the Mainstay in Rock Hall, and Ron Fithian, Rock Hall town manager, Kent County commissioner and former waterman, as they share their documentary, “Those Were the Days: Golden Age of Rock Hall Watermen, 1945-1972,” and the reflections of 18 watermen and women who worked on the water in the mid-20th century.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 5 pm, award-winning photographer Dave Harp will discuss the legacy of de Gast, whose evocative, understated photographic style and mastery of observation influenced generations of Chesapeake photographers, writers and artists.

“After de Gast: The Chesapeake Transformation Since 1972,” will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Dr. Bill Dennison, professor of marine science and vice president for science applications at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, will discuss how the Chesapeake has changed since de Gast captured its landscapes and people in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the impacts on the Chesapeake’s fisheries, industry, and culture.

The final offering in the speaker series will be “The Life and Work of Robert de Gast” on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 2 pm. CBMM Chief Curator Pete Lesher, curator of Robert de Gast’s Chesapeake, will explore the remarkable life and work of de Gast as told through the museum’s extensive collections of his photography, writing, and oral histories.

St. Michaels Concours d’ Elegance 11th Anniversary this September

The celebration of the 11th anniversary of St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the Fogg Cove Landing waterfront campus portion of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and on the picturesque waterfront law of Inn at Perry Cabin by Belmond. The internationally acclaimed event was in fact opened on the grounds of the Inn at Perry Cabin back in 2007 by Founding Chairman George Walish, past president of Rolls Royce of North America. Local volunteers of the St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance celebrated a historic return home to St. Michaels in 2016 through partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and are delighted that the Maritime Museum will be co-hosting.

The St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance showcases some of the finest automobiles from around the world and is proud to announce the Honorable Judge Joseph C. Cassini III is the Honorable Chairman for 2017. Judge Cassini, billed by The New York Times as “a Well- Traveled Concours Winner is the owner of many exquisite classics and recipient of numerous trophies, including two Pebble Beach Best of Show wins. The St. Michaels Concours has been dubbed by some as one of the top 10 such events in the United States, and Walish has called it the “Pro-Bowl” to Pebble Beach’s “Super Bowl” of classic motorcar competitions. In the tradition of the historic Concours events held in Paris, the exhibit of automobiles will be complemented by an elegant fashion show presented by Chesapeake Outfitters.

Final details of Concours weekend are being made to include a gala benefit dinner, tickets are available online for $ 200. The dinner will be highlighted with a presentation by the Classic Motor Museum’s students enrolled in its automotive educational program on Saturday evening at the Inn at Perry Cabin by Belmond.

“The Inn’s historic nature”, says Concours Chairman Luke Phipps, “ the beautiful gardens and its grandeur are the perfect backdrop for an event which has style at its core.” The Inn’s waterfront lawn and show field on Sunday will feature rare, pre-war European and American coach-built automobiles as well as significantly important post-war Sports Cars. A special class of previous Best in Show winners is being created. This Best in Show exhibition will be joined by the Senior Award Winning Automobiles from the significant Concours throughout the country, including Pebble Beach, Amelia Island and Radnor Hunt. Phipps adds, “With Chef MacDonald’s culinary expertise and commitment to local ingredients, we’ll be debuting an enhanced exclusive VIP and entrants gallery, which will feature a gourmet garden party with live music, flowing champagne and culinary delights.” An additional display of classic wooden speed boats next door at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, will enhance the mood of stepping back in time.

The Concours will continue its partnership with the Classic Motor Museum in 2017, with plans for the Museum to host Saturday’s Motoring Tour departing from the newly constructed post and beam exhibits barn housing the museum’s main collection for an antique and classic airplane rendezvous at the Easton Airport. “That partnership remains particularly important to us,” adds Phipps, “once again the beneficiary of the 2017 Concours is the Classic Motor Museum of St. Michaels. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Classic Motor Museum and St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance prioritize education for local kids and young adults. The new Classic Motor Museum recently launched an automotive educational program and restoration of a rare1938 Alvis Drop head coupe which shall be on display the entire weekend.
